Who you can become
“Let today be the day you give up who you’ve been for who you can become”- Hal Elrod.
As I read this quote, I thought easier said than done, right?
The path of self -discovery can be a tricky one. It is a path that is filled with signposts, detours, greenlights and wrong way go back signs, it has the ability to play tricks on even the most robust minds.
This time of year is filled with nostalgic reflections. What we have achieved, what we didn’t, who we were, who we pleased, loved, lost, challenged, or changed. How we created the life we lived and how the choices we made, lead us to the path we are currently on.
Life is one great, fantastic, frightening, sad, beautiful, happy and wonderful discovery for us all. Life is not meant to be easy; it will have moments of difficultly, loss, pain, followed by times of joy, happiness, pleasure and contentment. The forever swinging pendulum between light and shade. We can not have one without the other. Each allows us to appreciate where we are on our paths.
I am sure if you reflected on this year, you could find the light and shade of the past year. How have they made who you are this year? What will you be letting go of as the clock strikes midnight, and what lessons will you carry with you into 2022?
While it is easy to say let go of who we have been, to make way for who we can become, I feel we need to carry the defining moments that have made us. We need those anchors.
Those defining moments that have made us feel elated, the moments we thought would break us, only to reveal just how resilient we can be.
Perhaps it is the everyday lessons that we want to keep with us to remind us that life is short and maybe living in the present, is why it is a gift.
There are times where I see myself as this puzzle, with missing pieces, that I find with each new year, slowly I find another piece of who I am. I like to think that where the missing pieces of the puzzle are, beams of light shining out, kind of like a torch, looking for the gifts this life can bring.
Like most missing pieces and broken parts, the light will shine through. Where there is darkness, light can be found - a kaleidoscope of hope.
It is this kaleidoscope of hope that pushes us forward, it guides us into the next phase of who we are becoming. And this is the season of hope. Hope is what we carry with us into each new year, the hope to be better, do better. Hope to be healthier and stronger, hope to be good and do good. Hope for better days and hope to get us through the bad ones.
So maybe instead of all the new resolutions and expectations we put on ourselves this time of year, we carry hope into the new year. Hope to remind us of what we have been given and where we will travel on our quest of our own becoming.
Big Love,
Fallon xoxo
